Dignitaries were on hand at the Don Young Port of Alaska Monday to kick off a major milestone in the Port Modernization Program, the start of construction on a new cargo bay.
The replacement for Cargo Terminal One is estimated to cost $977 million and be completed in 2029. Construction of cargo terminal 2 is slated to start in 2029 and be completed in 2032. Port Director Terry Umatum said the idea is to replace failing infrastructure and enlarge the capacity at the port.
“In this world they are not building smaller ships anymore, everything just keeps getting bigger and bigger,” Umatum said. “So, the modernization program here at the Port of Alaska is to accommodate these larger vessels coming in in the future.”
The $2.75 billion estimated price tag for the entire project will primarily be funded by port revenue bonds issued by the municipality that will be paid back through surcharges on shipped goods. But there have also been significant federal and state contributions.
